MLB reviews Bryce Harper's actions during Washington Nationals' win

Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper could face punishment from Major League Baseball for his outburst directed at an umpire during the ninth inning of Monday night's game against the Detroit Tigers.

The league office is reviewing Harper's actions near the end of the Nationals' 5-4 victory over the Tigers at Nationals Park when Harper was ejected while in the dugout by home plate umpire Brian Knight after teammate Danny Espinosa was called out on strikes.

The next batter, pinch-hitter Clint Robinson, hit the winning home run and Harper ran onto the field with teammates to celebrate even though players ejected from a game are required to leave the dugout.

Harper pointed at Knight on the field and cursed at him. After the game, Harper said he used "a couple choice words."

Nationals manager Dusty Baker said Tuesday that Harper probably deserved "a fine or something."

"Probably what he did and said was wrong," Baker said. "But, I mean, how many people say and do wrong things every day? Plus, I'm not the judge here. And I'm not going to help the judge."

Harper was not available for comment before Tuesday night's game but said Monday night that he would pay any fine he received.

"I happen to like the young man -- not because he's a heck of a ballplayer, but I happen to like him, period. Know what I mean?" Baker said. "Now, will I have to spank him sometimes? Maybe."
