Baltimore Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith will have the screws removed from his surgically repaired right foot next week.

Smith will need four to six weeks to recover, a team source told ESPN.com on Friday.

Smith likely will miss most of the spring offseason workouts but he could participate in a minicamp in June, according to ESPN. Smith is expected to be ready for the start of training camp in late July.

Smith, 27, suffered a season-ending Lisfranc foot injury 16 months ago and underwent surgery in November 2014.

Smith started all 16 games for the Ravens last season, finishing with 54 tackles, three interceptions, one sack and 10 passes defended. He acknowledged following the season that the foot injury and subsequent recovery had affected him in 2015.

"It's definitely a difficult injury, kind of more than I expected," Smith said at the team's offseason workout program earlier this month.

"I'm hoping that it doesn't bother me at all, but I'd be lying if I said it doesn't still get sore just from the amount of training I've already done. But it's just kind of like with any injury -- when it heals, it heals, and when it's done, it's done."

Smith signed a four-year, $41.1 million extension with Baltimore before the 2015 season.
