Jacob deGrom: New York Mets pitcher to rejoin team

Jacob deGrom passed the test of a simulated game in Florida and is likely to rejoin the starting rotation of the New York Mets this weekend.

The Mets placed deGrom on Major League Baseball's family medical emergency list Saturday due to an issue regarding his baby.

The 27-year-old deGrom left the team to be with his wife Stacey in Florida during the birth of Jaxon Anthony deGrom on Monday night and remained with the family since the complications developed. The improvement in his son's health cleared deGrom to get back to baseball.

Collins said deGrom seems exhausted "mentally more than physically."

The bereavement/medical emergency list allows the Mets to replace deGrom on the roster for three to seven days.

The team's Florida complex is about 2 1/2 hours from deGrom's home in DeLand, Fla.

"It's a real-life situation," Collins said Saturday. "Certainly we take the game of baseball very seriously, but this changes a lot of things. (He's) such a good guy. Stacey, she's outstanding. You just sit here the last few days -- and those guys in there can all tell you, they do the best to stay in touch with him. We're all praying and pulling for him. Unfortunately, it's part of life, and we've got to take care of business."

The Mets believe deGrom could re-enter the rotation in Atlanta if his family situation remains positive. He won his only start this season, giving up one run in six innings.
