Free agent tight end Vernon Davis agreed to a one-year contract with the Washington Redskins.

Davis, who was a first-round pick out of Maryland in 2006, spent 10 seasons with the 49ers until he was traded to the Denver Broncos in October 2015. He played nine games with the Broncos last season but had just 20 receptions and five drops.

Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan said during owners meetings in Florida that he was interested in signing Davis, with whom he had familiarity from their time in San Francisco.

The Redskins have established starter Jordan Reed ahead of Davis and Niles Paul is considered a rising talent. But Reed's health is never a given and the Redskins developed an offensive system reliant on production from their inside receivers and tight ends.

Davis has 55 career touchdown receptions and 461 total catches.
