Backup running backs Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware signed contract extensions with the Kansas City Chiefs.

West became the starter when Jamaal Charles was lost for the season with a knee injury on Oct. 11, and led the team with 634 rushing yards on 160 carries. He caught 20 passes for 214 yards.

Ware averaged 5.6 yards per carry and scored a team-high six rushing touchdowns.

"Charcandrick and Spencer both stepped in and were very effective for us offense went last year," general manager John Dorsey said. "These guys have different styles and abilities and together they provide us quality to put the running back position."

Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

West, 24, was undrafted out of Abilene Christian. He transferred there from Louisiana Tech and played all four seasons at Abilene but until his senior season in 2013 never had 100 carries in a season. In a predraft workout, the Chiefs reportedly timed West in under 4.4 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

He was cut by the Chiefs in the final roster reduction before training camp and re-signed to the practice squad for 2014.
