Kansas City Chiefs' Justin Houston could miss the 2016 season after having ACL surgery on his left knee.

The Chiefs on Tuesday revealed that the five-year linebacker out of Georgia had surgery in February to fix the anterior cruciate ligament. Houston suffered a hyperextended left knee in November in a game against the Buffalo Bills.

The Kansas City Star reported orthopedic surgeon James Andrews determined while scoping Houston's knee in early February that the ACL was not functioning properly, even though it wasn't torn.

Houston, who is only one year removed from leading the league in sacks with 22, had surgery on Feb. 16. Recovery time for ACL surgery ranges from six to 12 months. He could be ready as early as mid-August or as late as February.

Houston recorded 7 1/2 sacks in 11 games last season.

"Right now, he's in the middle of the process of doing rehabilitation," Rick Burkholder, the Chiefs' trainer, told the Star. "It's too early to tell where he's at right now, but he's on the road to recovery."

After his league-leading performance in 2014, Houston signed a six-year, $101 million extension with the Chiefs.
