Shortstop Ruben Tejada was placed on waivers by the New York Mets on Tuesday.

ESPN and the New York Post reported Tejada was not on the team bus to Jupiter, Fla., for a game with the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.

Teams are not allowed to discuss waivers per MLB rules. Letting Tejada go two weeks before the start of the regular season would clear the Mets from paying five-sixth of his scheduled $3 million salary in 2016.

Any team that claims Tejada would assume his existing contract.

Tejada was healthy when he reported to spring training after suffering a fractured fibula in his right leg on a slide from Chase Utley of the Los Angeles Dodgers during Game 2 of the National League Division Series.
