Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside was suspended for one game without pay for throwing an elbow into the head of San Antonio Spurs center Boban Marjanovic, the NBA announced Thursday.

Whiteside received a flagrant 2 foul and was ejected from the contest, won 119-101 by San Antonio on Feb. 9.

Whiteside will serve the suspension on Feb. 19 when the Heat visit the Atlanta Hawks.

The incident happened with 9:35 remaining in the fourth quarter during a free-throw attempt. Whiteside was immediately sent home by the team and coach Erik Spoelstra was dismayed after the contest.

"We don't condone that kind of play," Spoelstra said. "We've been through this with him before. But it's a disappointing play. That's not a basketball play."

Forward Chris Bosh said Whiteside needs to become more aware of how he is being perceived around the league due to such actions.

"The next step for him is really learning about reputation," Bosh said. "Unfortunately, he's taken a step back. You have to build your reputation back up."
