PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- Chez Reavie shot an 8-under-par 63 on Thursday at Monterey Peninsula Country Club to take the early first-round lead at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Reavie had a one-stroke lead over Bronson Burgoon, who shot a 64 on the par-71 Monterey Peninsula course, which is the easiest of the three courses in the rotation. Australian Cameron Smith, who tied for fourth in the 2015 Masters, was also 7 under at Monterey through 16 holes.

At Pebble Beach, Freddie Jacobson shot a 7-under 65 on the par-72 course.

Ricky Barnes, a former U.S. Amateur champion, shot 65 at Monterey and Spencer Levin posted a 6-under 66 at Pebble, where he won the 2004 California Amateur.

Jordan Spieth, who leads the World Golf Rankings, finished with a 1-under 71 at Spyglass, where Phil Mickelson posted a 4-under 68.

"I played the hardest holes under par," Spieth said, "and then played the easier holes over par."

The weather was beautiful, with the temperature in the high 60s, sunshine and scattered clouds for an event that beginning on the Monterey Peninsula as the Bing Crosby Pro-Am in 1937 has become infamous for rain and chill.

Mickelson, 45, a four-time Crosby/AT&T champion, said, "It's the best I've driven in a long time. I'm not worried about putting. Feel relaxed over each putt."

Defending champion Brandt Snedeker was even through 16 holes at Spyglass, where most of the top contenders and celebrity amateurs were playing.
