The 29-year-old Gasquet is now 13-12 in ATP World Tour finals, having last clinched a trophy in May 2015 at Estoril, Portugal. Gasquet missed the Australian Open last month because of a back injury.

Mathieu, 34, swept into a 3-0 lead at the start of the pair's eighth meeting, but Gasquet regrouped and recovered to 3-3. Mathieu saved two break points in a 12-point seventh game, then broke Gasquet to 30 to serve for the set at 5-4.

Gasquet broke Mathieu in the first game of the second set and went on to close out the match in one hour and 48 minutes.

Gasquet has a 6-2 record in his career against Mathieu.

SOFIA OPEN
