Jason Dufner takes CareerBuilder Challenge in playoff

By The Sports Xchange

Jason Dufner hit the pin with a shot from the rocks on the 17th hole's island green at PGA West's TPC Stadium Course, and he went on to edge Sweden's David Lingmerth in the second hole of a playoff to win the CareerBuilder Challenge on Sunday in La Quinta, Calif.

The victory was the fourth of Dufner's career and his first since his only Grand Slam title, in the 2013 PGA Championship at Oak Hill in Pittsford, N.Y.

After both players made par on the first playoff hole, Dufner rolled in a short par putt for the win on the second extra hole.

Dufner's tee shot on No. 17 landed on the rocks at the short end of the green. Pulling his club face to the side and using an abbreviated stroke to avoid hitting a boulder, Dufner ran the ball across the green and saw it strike the flag stick before rolling a few inches from the cup.

Dufner tapped in for par, then closed with another par to force the playoff. He finished with a 2-under-par 70 for a four-day total of 25-under 263.

Lingmerth closed with a 65 on Sunday after carding a 62 on Saturday to finish at 263. His bogey-free round Sunday included seven birdies.

Former President Bill Clinton presented the trophy to Dufner, a 38-year-old from Alabama.

Phil Mickelson shot a final-round 68 to finish in a tie for third place at 267 in his first tournament of 2016. Andrew Loupe and Kevin Na also carded 68s to share third place with Mickelson.

Luke List (final-round 66), Jamie Lovemark (73) and Canada's Adam Hadwin (72) shared sixth place at 268.

Defending champion Bill Haas, a two-time winner of the event, tied for ninth place with South Korea's Si Woo Kim. Haas shot a 67 on Sunday, while Kim shot a 68.
