Top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners pass by No. 13 Baylor Bears

WACO, Texas -- Oklahoma guard Buddy Hield spent most of the first half against Baylor as a spectator, watching from the bench and cheering as his Sooners thrived without him.

Then Hield got in the act in the second half and helped top-ranked Oklahoma finish off No. 13 Baylor, 82-72, on Saturday at the Ferrell Center.

"Jordan (Woodard) was really carrying the whole team, making shots," said Hield, who picked up his second foul at the 8:53 mark of the first half and sat until after the break. "I was celebrating more than anybody on the bench. I was happy to see them make a lot of shots during that stretch."

Woodard finished with 20 points and Hield added 19 for the Sooners (16-2, 5-2 Big 12) as they bounced back from an 82-77 loss at No. 19 Iowa State on Monday. Oklahoma shot 62 percent from the field and hit 16 of 28 3-pointers against Baylor.

The Sooners dished out 29 assists and tallied 28 points off 16 Baylor turnovers.

"The ball movement was really good," Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger said. "I didn't realize 29 assists. That's a big-time number. Anytime you do that it means you're moving the ball well and making a lot of shots."

Hield, who scored 14 after the break, hit treys on back-to-back trips down the floor early in the second half during a key 9-0 run. Hield's second 3-pointer in the surge gave Oklahoma the lead, 50-41, as it began to take control.

The Sooners charged ahead by 24 when forward Dante Buford hit a jump shot with 5:33 left. Though Oklahoma did not score in the final five minutes, it did plenty of work in the first 35 to earn a road win.

"It was a good rhythm," Hield said. "I could feel it. It starts with Ryan (Spangler). When Ryan made shots it opened up everybody and Isaiah (Cousins), too. Isaiah was finding the open guy. He found the open guy and made shots too."

Sooners starting guards Hield, Woodard and Cousins combined to hit 12 of 19 3-pointers, while dishing out 19 assists to keep Oklahoma rolling.

The Sooners' snapped Baylor's five-game winning streak in Big 12 play and bumped the Bears (15-4, 5-2) from their brief perch atop the conference standings.

Forward Taurean Prince led Baylor with 15 points, while forward Johnathan Motley added 13 and guard King McClure had 11.

Prince said Baylor made the mistake of letting Oklahoma find the range from beyond the arc early in the game and it continued throughout.

"I don't think they exposed the zone," Prince said. "We had some defensive breakdowns early. We did a bad job of making sure we were in the right place at the right time."

Cousins finished with 13 and forward Spangler had 11 to join Woodard and Hield in double figures for Oklahoma.

Woodard scored 20 in the first half to lead the Sooners to a 37-30 edge at the break. His offensive production came with Hield on the bench.

Woodard hit five of six 3-pointers by halftime and he completed a 3-point play that sparked the Sooners' key run of the half.

Oklahoma trailed 27-26 when Woodard hit a jumper in transition and got fouled at the 4:46 mark. He hit the free throw and then hit two treys in the next two minutes, while the Sooners held Baylor on the defensive end.

Sooners forward Dante Buford hit a jump shot from the baseline to cap an 11-0 run that gave Oklahoma a 37-27 lead with 1:31 left before the break.

"They're so good in transition, you can't give them opportunities in transition," Baylor coach Scott Drew said. "And then from 3, they made some tough ones, they made some open ones and we didn't do a very good job of contesting enough of them."

Oklahoma's first-half run answered a Baylor surge when McClure came off the bench to score seven straight points during a 12-0 streak. Prince finished the surge with a 3-pointer that put Baylor ahead, 22-16.

McClure and Prince each scored seven in the first half to pace Baylor.

NOTES: Oklahoma enjoyed total domination of its series against Baylor not too long ago. Entering the 2010 season, the Sooners had won 30 straight against Baylor. But the Bears broke that streak by sweeping the Big 12 series in 2010. The rivalry was split going into Saturday's game with the Sooners and Bears each winning seven games since the beginning of 2010. ... Oklahoma lost earlier in the week against Iowa State despite making 17 3-pointers. The Sooners have made 10 or more from beyond the arc 12 times this season. ... Baylor F Rico Gathers is on a five-game drought without a double-double. Gathers, who is second in Baylor history with 31 double-doubles, last reached double figures in scoring and rebounding on Jan. 5 when he had 17 points and 17 rebounds in a win over Oklahoma State.
