Cleveland Browns discuss role for Ron Wolf

By The Sports Xchange

Hall of Fame general manager Ron Wolf could consult the Cleveland Browns and steer owner Jimmy Haslam in the offseason reconstruction of the team.

According to report, Haslam is planning to get Wolf's help in the review of the 2015 performance of the Browns. It is not yet known if Wolf will help determine the fate of head coach Mike Pettine.

Wolf last worked in a full-time capacity in 2001 but has 38 years of NFL experience as a talent evaluator. He hired former Browns head coach Mike Holmgren to be head coach of the Green Bay Packers and was a sounding board for Holmgren during his time with the Cleveland Browns.

Wolf, who turns 77 this week, and former Bills, Panthers and Colts general manager Bill Polian were enshrined to the Pro Football Hall of Fame as contributors.

Beyond the future of Pettine, the Browns have a series of front-burner issues to tackle: general manager Ray Farmer's track record building a roster is not good, and he has clashed with Pettine, according to reports; Johnny Manziel is under contract but the Browns are still without a mainstay at quarterback, an annual drama dating to their return to the NFL in 1999; Pro Bowl center Alex Mack can opt out of his contract and test free agency again.

Wolf's first move might be to suggest a change at quarterback based on his comments in Canton two years ago about the end of Holmgren's run with the Browns.

"To me, the No. 1 tenet in the game is, you've got to have a quarterback. If you don't have a quarterback, then you can't play. They didn't get that guy," Wolf said.
