A double-murder trial of Aaron Hernandez scheduled to begin in January has been postponed, Suffolk County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Locke said in a statement Thursday.

Hernandez, serving a life sentence in Massachusetts for the murder of Odin Lloyd, was granted a motion filed by his defense team with the support of the prosecution.

The next scheduled date in the case is a status hearing on Jan. 19, which had been the expected start of the trial.

Hernandez is standing trial for the 2012 homicides of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado and the non-fatal shooting of a witness, Alexander S. Bradley, in July 2013.

Hernandez pleaded not guilty. The incident is alleged to have escalated following an encounter in a nightclub in Boston's South End.
