Tyson Fury scored a victory by unanimous decision over long-standing champion Wladimir Klitschko on Saturday night to win the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight titles in a 12-round bout at Duesseldorf, Germany.
Two judges scored the fight 115-112 and the other had it 116-111. The loss was the first for Klitschko since losing to Lamon Brewster on April 10, 2004.
The 27-year-old Fury (25-0) wasn't intimidated by Klitschko and taunted and baited him at times during the match. The Briton opened a cut under Klitschko's right eye in the fifth round and proceeded to control the rest of the fight.
"I worked for six months for this in the gym, it's a dream come true," the 6-foot-6 Fury said in a ringside interview after the match.
Klitschko, 39, had held the IBF belt since 2006. He picked up the WBO crown in 2008 and the WBA title in 2011.
Klitschko (64-4) tried to mount a final-round rally but was unable to score the knockout he needed. The defeat ended the Ukrainian's string of 22 consecutive victories.
"The speed was missing," the 6-9 Klitschko said. "Reach played a big role. I tried but it didn't work."
Fury's in-ring taunts followed a buildup to the bout in which he dressed as Batman and serenaded Klitschko with insults.
"I've said some stupid things," Fury said after winning the belt. "Wladimir, you're a great champion and thanks for having me. It was all fun and games in the buildup."
