The San Francisco 49ers signed running back Travaris Cadet and waived running back Pierre Thomas on Tuesday.

Cadet, who played at Appalachian State, originally was signed by the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2012. In three-plus seasons, he had only 11 rushing attempts but did have 46 receptions and 51 kick returns.

He signed with the New England Patriots this past offseason but was waived in early October. The Patriots were expected to vie for his services after losing running back Dion Lewis in Sunday's game with a torn left ACL.

Thomas, a longtime member of the Saints, signed with San Francisco on Nov. 3 and played in one game for the 49ers, rushing for 12 yards on four carries against the Atlanta Falcons.

The 49ers' running game is dealing with a litany of injuries. Carlos Hyde is recovering from a stress fracture. Reggie Bush is out for the season. Mike Davis remains on short-term injured reserve with a hand fracture and is not eligible to be activated until Week 17.
