Decision day is near for Baltimore tight end Dennis Pitta. Pitta has until Wednesday to decide if he is going to play this year. Wednesday is the final day the Ravens can add him to the 53-man roster.
"That's kind of our last day to make a determination, and I don't have an announcement until Wednesday on that," head Coach John Harbaugh told the team's website. "It's not a black-and-white decision, but this is a decision he has to make with the doctors."
Pitta began the season on the physically unable to prepare list after suffering a dislocated hip last season. It was the same hip and same injury he suffered the previous year.
He returned to the Ravens' practice field 21 days ago. The plan, Pitta said on Oct. 21, was to see how his body responds to the contact and to determine if "I can potentially help the team."
Harbaugh said Pitta still can contribute and would welcome the veteran with open arms.
"Dennis is going to play if he can; there's no doubt in my mind, based on what I've talked to him [about]," Harbaugh said. "If it's safe and he feels like he can get out there and the hip is responding well, he's going to play. And if it's not safe, then he's not going to play."
Harbaugh said Pitta looked good in practice and the defense had a difficult time covering him.
"He made a bunch of plays out there and just kind of looked like his old self out there."
If Pitta does not believe he can play, the Ravens will place him on season-ending injured reserve.
