LOS ANGELES -- The San Diego Padres reached the end of a disappointing season Sunday and the end of Pat Murphy's tenure as manager.

The team announced immediately following San Diego's 6-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers that Murphy would not be retained as manager. A search for the 2016 manager will begin immediately.

Murphy was hired on an interim basis when Bud Black was fired June 16. The Padres were 32-34 at the time, six games behind the Dodgers in the National League West standings.

Under Murphy, they went 42-54 and finished 18 games behind the Dodgers in fourth place.

"I don't think I got a chance to be me," Murphy said before the season finale Sunday. "I didn't get to set the tone the way that I wanted to do it. I found out that my inner self isn't great unless I really get to put my mark on it.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to have experienced this. But at the same time, the competitor in me wishes that I could have had more impact at a deeper level in how we play, the mentality."

Padres infielder Jedd Gyorko said Murphy did not have an easy task when he replaced Black.

"It was a tough situation for anyone to be thrown into," Gyorko said. "It would be hard for anyone to come in like that. I don't know if anyone would have been better. Obviously, we weren't winning when he took over, and we didn't play that well for him.

"It's tough losing, and I'm sure it was tough for him."
