Three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart plans to retire after the 2016 season, multiple media outlets reported Sunday.

The 2015 season has been a difficult one for Stewart, who is 25th in the standings and has not won a race this year.

His plan, according to an ESPN report, is to drive for one more season before giving up the Stewart-Haas Racing No. 14 car to Clint Bowyer in 2017.

Bowyer currently is driving for Michael Waltrip Racing, but that team is ending operations after this year. Bowyer is expected to drive for HScott Motorsports in 2016.

Stewart won the Sprint Cup in 2002, 2005 and 2011. However, he did not qualify for the Chase for the Sprint Cup this year.

Stewart, 45, is tied for 13th in career victories with 48.

He missed the final 15 races of the 2013 season with a broken leg.

Stewart missed three races last year after the sprint car he was driving hit and killed Kevin Ward Jr., who was on foot, at Canandaigua Motorsports Park.
