FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y., Sept. 1 (UPI) -- The upset bug didn't bite nearly as hard at the United States Open Tennis Championships Tuesday -- as the No. 2 seed and the top-seeded American cruised to victory in New York City.

Five-time Open winner Roger Federer was dominant in his first round match against Argentina's Leonardo Mayer Tuesday afternoon. In fact, Mayer won just five games the entire match (6-1, 6-2, 6-2).

"I'm playing very well at the moment. Playing with confidence. Got off to a good start," the Swiss champion said. "Thankfully I took this match extremely serious."

The top American in the men's draw, No. 13 John Isner, also found little resistance from Tunisia's Malek Jaziri -- like Federer, winning in straight sets (6-2, 6-3, 6-4).

"I felt like I played well today. I played aggressive. I moved well. I'm very fresh right now," Isner said. "It gets tougher from here on out, but I'm very pleased with my first round."

Because no American men's player has won the US Open since Andy Roddick in 2003, many are hoping Isner or 28th-seeded Jack Sock can make a run at this year's tournament. Sock advanced, as well, Tuesday after defeating the Dominican Republic's Victor Estrella Burgos 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.

"A lot of people like to say 'breakthrough year'. For me, try to stay consistent match in and match out," Sock said. "I always want to do well here, my home slam, my favorite two weeks of the year."

Two seeded Frenchmen, though, were eliminated Tuesday -- No. 11 Gilles Simon and No. 16 Gael Monfils. Those two, plus 2014 runner-up Kei Nishikori on Monday, are the only men's seeds who have so far been bounced from the tournament.

Six seeded women were eliminated Monday. Three more were upset Tuesday.

No. 2-seeded women's player, Simona Halep, easily won her opening round match Tuesday -- as did fourth seed Caroline Wozniacki and ninth seed Garbine Muguruza.
