Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Julius Thomas is expected to require surgery for a tendon injury on his left hand and reportedly could miss up to five weeks if he does.

Thomas will get a second opinion Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday.

"We'll know more tomorrow," Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell said Monday.

It's a turnaround from a report over the weekend that said Thomas was making good progress and could be ready to play in the season opener against the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 13.

Thomas suffered a stable fracture in his left hand during Jacksonville's 23-21 preseason victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Aug. 14.

Thomas was expected to be Blake Bortles' top target after the Jaguars signed the tight end to a five-year, $46.2 million contract earlier this year.

The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Thomas scored 24 touchdowns for the Denver Broncos over the past two years.
