Everett Golson will start at QB for Florida State

Everett Golson, a senior transfer from Notre Dame, will start for Florida State in the season opener against Texas State on Sept. 5.

Coach Jimbo Fisher chose Golson over junior Sean Maguire, who led FSU to a win over Clemson last season as starter Jameis Winston was suspended.

That is the only game Maguire has started in his career. Meanwhile, Golson has 25 starts under his belt, including the 2012 BCS National Championship game, which the Irish lost to Alabama.

Golson threw for 3,445 yards and 29 touchdowns last season at Notre Dame. He graduated in May and transferred to Florida State shortly after. According to NCAA rules, a graduate transfer can play immediately.

Golson nearly beat the Seminoles last year. He completed 31 of 52 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-27 loss to the second-ranked Seminoles.
