Magic general manager Rob Hennigan made the announcement Monday after the story was reported the day before.

The move removes Napier's $1.3 million from Miami's books and could save the Heat about $4.5 million in salary and luxury taxes, according to ESPN.com

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Napier played in 51 games as a rookie last season, averaging 5.1 points, and 2.5 assists in 19.8 minutes per game, while shooting 36.4 percent from 3-point range.

Napier, 24, underwent sports hernia surgery on April 1. He returned to action this summer and scored 14 points and added six assists in Miami's final game in the Orlando Pro Summer League. He also averaged 18 points in three games during summer league play in Las Vegas.

As a college senior in 2014, Napier led the University of Connecticut to the NCAA Tournament title and was named the Final Four's Most Outstanding Player. He also part of UConn's 2011 NCAA championship team.
