Jeff Gordon bringing back legendary rainbow paint scheme

BRISTOL, Conn., June 30 (UPI) -- Bristol's bright bulbs won't be the only thing illuminating the speedway for an Aug. 22 night race.

In his final Sprint Cup season, Jeff Gordon told CBS This Morning that he will bring back his trademark rainbow roadster.

NBCSN will air the race. Gordon owned the rainbow paint scheme during his run of three championships and 52 series victories from 1992 to 2000. No. 24 has a total of four championships and 92 career series victories.

The paint scheme is sponsored by Axalta.

Gordon, 43, finished in 16th place Sunday at Sonoma Raceway.

"We're trying to win," Gordon told USA Today. "We're trying to get outside of our comfort zone and box a little bit (with the setup). It didn't work out today, but it will."
