Frank Schleck won't start in Tour de France

Frank Schleck won't race in the upcoming Tour de France because of a knee injury.

The Luxembourg native finished 12th in last year's Tour de France and was third in 2011.

"Big disappointment," Schleck wrote on his Twitter feed Tuesday. "The medical staff and myself decided not to start in #tdf due to knee problems."

Schleck said the knee issue worsened during the recent Tour de Suisse.

"The knee wasn't getting any better during the Tour de Suisse, despite daily treatments and all of us hoping for a miracle," Schleck added in a release on the Trek Factory racing team's website. "We took the decision together and I think it's correct. I can't push it for 21 days straight and hope to make it to Paris. What I need is rest."

Schleck was racing this season for the first time without brother Andy, the 2010 Tour de France winner who retired after the 2014 season.
