Giants designate 3B McGehee for assignment

The San Francisco Giants designated third baseman Casey McGehee for assignment on Sunday after acquiring the infielder in December.

McGehee, 32, was off to a poor start with the Giants as they look for a replacement for Pablo Sandoval, who departed in free agency last offseason. McGehee was batting just .200 with a .254 on-base percentage and two home runs in 35 games.

He was acquired by the Giants in a trade from Miami after winning NL Comeback Player of the Year with the Marlins in 2014. After playing in Japan in 2013, McGehee returned to the majors and batted .287 with a .355 on-base percentage in 160 games.

In his seven-year career for the Cubs, Brewers, Pirates, Yankees, Marlins and Giants, McGehee is a .262 hitter with 67 home runs in 746 games.

To take McGehee's place on the active roster, the Giants added right-handed pitcher Hunter Strickland from Triple-A Sacramento.
