The New Jersey Devils named Ray Shero general manager Monday.
The announcement was made by team president Lou Lamoriello, who had served as GM since 1987. Lamoriello will continue in his role as the team's president.
During Lamoriello's tenure as GM, the Devils won three Stanley Cup Championships, five Eastern Conference titles and nine divisional championships in 21 playoff appearances.
Shero was executive vice president and general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2006-14. During that time, the team compiled a 373-193-56 mark, won the 2009 Stanley Cup as well as two consecutive Eastern Conference titles in 2007-08 and 2008-09, and had three first-place divisional finishes.
"Ray is well-respected throughout the hockey industry and knows what it takes to win," said Lamoriello. "His 22 seasons of NHL front-office experience will be beneficial to the New Jersey Devils organization. I look forward to working alongside Ray."
The 52-year-old Shero, who was the 2012-13 recipient of the General Manager of the Year Award, also is heavily involved with USA Hockey. He is a member of the National Team Advisory Board and served as the assistant GM of the U.S. team for the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
One of Shero's first tasks will be finding a new head coach for the team, which was co-coached by Lamoriello, Scott Stevens and Adam Oates during the second half of 2014-15.
The son of late Hall of Fame coach Fred Shero, Ray Shero joined the Penguins after eight seasons as an assistant GM in Nashville and six in the same position with Ottawa.
