The St. Louis Cardinals purchased the contract of pitcher Tim Cooney from their Triple-A affiliate in Memphis to make Thursday's start against Philadelphia.

Cooney was 2-1 with a 3.63 ERA in three starts for Memphis this season. The 24-year-old lefty will make his major league debut on Thursday.

The Cardinals opened a spot on the 25-man roster by optioning catcher Cody Stanley to Memphis and freed space on the 40-man roster by transferring pitcher Adam Wainwright to the 60-day disabled list.

Wainwright will miss the remainder of the season while recovering from a torn left Achilles.
