Kohlschreiber wins; Tomic ousted in Munich

Fifth-seeded German crowd favorite Philipp Kohlschreiber won his first-round match, while No. 6 seed Bernard Tomic came up a loser Tuesday at the BMW Open tennis event.

The two-time BMW champion (2007, 2012) and former runner-up (2013) Kohlschreiber whipped last week's Bucharest runner-up Jiri Vesely 6-1, 6-2, while wild card and former top-10 star Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia saved a match point before outlasting the Aussie Tomic 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) on the red clay at MTTC Iphitos.

Two other seeds avoided upsets, as No. 8 Fabio Fognini of Italy bested Austrian lucky-loser Bastian Trinker 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) and No. 9 Czech Lukas Rosol leveled German wild card and 2011 runner-up Florian Mayer 6-2, 6-2.

Fognini was last year's Munich runner-up to Martin Klizan.

Also on Day 2, Czech qualifier Radek Stepanek defeated Uzbekistan's Farrukh Dustov 6-1, 4-1, retired; qualifier Mischa Zverev edged out fellow German Jan- Lennard Struff 7-6 (7-6), 3-6, 6-4; Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky double-bageled Russian lucky-loser Mikhail Ledovskikh 6-0, 6-0; Austrian Dominic Thiem saved two match points in overcoming Canadian Vasek Pospisil 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (11-9); and Italian Simone Bolelli subdued German qualifier Dustin Brown 6-1, 7-6 (7-2).

In some second-round action on Wednesday, third-seeded Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut will face Stepanek, fourth-seeded Belgian David Goffin will tangle with the 2008 BMW runner-up Bolelli and Kohlschreiber will be opposed by wild card and fellow German Alexander Zverev.

This week's top seed is Britain's Andy Murray, who is making his first trip to Munich. He has not played since a loss to Novak Djokovic in the Miami final earlier this month and will take the court for the first time as a married man following his wedding two weeks ago.

Murray received a bye into the second round, where he'll face Mischa Zverev on Thursday.
