Greinke, Los Angeles Dodgers silence San Diego Padres

Zack Greinke threw seven flawless innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers edged the San Diego Padres 3-0 in the opener of a three-game series.

The Padres were averaging an NL-best 5.0 runs per game coming in, but Greinke (3-0) silenced them to the tune of four singles and three walks. He struck out seven and improved to 5-0 in his career against San Diego.

Carl Crawford hit a solo homer, and Juan Uribe knocked in his first run of the year for the Dodgers, who bounced back from getting swept in San Francisco.

Andrew Cashner (1-3) took another tough loss having given up two runs on six hits over seven innings. He struck out six and only walked one, but his offense failed him again.

There was a scare for the Dodgers in the first inning when Yasiel Puig took a 96 mph fastball off his left knee and stayed on the ground for about a minute. He gingerly walked to first base and remained in the game, but he appeared to suffer an injury to the same leg when trying to beat out an infield single in the sixth. Andre Ethier replaced him in right field in the bottom half.

Both starters faced trouble in the second inning, and only one escaped.

Yasmani Grandal doubled with one away in the top half, and Uribe followed with a two-out dribbler through the middle to plate the game's first run.

The Padres put their first three hitters on in their turn, but Greinke bore down and kept them off the board. Alexi Amarista and Cashner both went down swinging, and Wil Myers lined out to an impeccably-placed Howie Kendrick behind the second-base bag.

Crawford smacked his first home run of the season leading off the seventh, and the Dodgers looked as if they needed the insurance run after getting into trouble in the home eighth.

Pedro Baez gave up a two-out double to former Dodger Matt Kemp, and Justin Upton followed with a sharp one-hopper in the hole between third and short. Jimmy Rollins made a diving stop to save a run, and Paco Rodriguez needed just one pitch to retire Yonder Alonso on a harmless ground ball.

Joc Pederson tacked on a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the ninth, and Yimi Garcia pitched a perfect bottom half to record his first career save.
