One Lucky Dane injured, Dortmund works for Derby

One Lucky Dane, second in the Santa Anita Derby, is injured and won't run in next month's Kentucky Derby.

Trained by Bob Baffert, One Lucky Dane suffered a broken bone during a workout Saturday at Santa Anita with Rafael Bejarano riding. Bejarano pulled up the colt, who lost his left front shoe soon after the work, after going five furlongs in 59.20 seconds.

Baffert revealed that X-rays showed the beginning of a condylar fracture in his left front foot, and that two screws would be inserted during surgery. One Lucky Dane is expected to be out four months.

One Lucky Dane, owned by Michael Lund Petersen, finished second to stablemate Dortmund in the Santa Anita Derby on April 4 and has earned $292,400 in six career starts with two wins.

Dortmund also worked out Saturday at Santa Anita, going five furlongs in 58.80 seconds with jockey Martin Garcia. The colt is owned by Kaleem Shah and has 170 points, second most in the Kentucky Derby points system.

"It was a nice move," Baffert said of Dortmund. "He was really happy out there. The track was in great shape today. He's happy. There's no regression."
