Indians sign Chacin to minor-league deal, DFA Marcum

The Cleveland Indians designated pitcher Shaun Marcum for assignment, signed pitcher Jhoulys Chacin to a minor league contract and purchased the contract of catcher Brett Hayes from Columbus on Tuesday.

Chacin owns a career record of 38-48 with a 3.78 ERA in 124 games, including 109 starts, over the last six seasons with the Colorado Rockies since 2009. The Rockies released him on March 22. He made just 11 starts in 2014 because of a right shoulder injury and had a mark of 1-7 with a 5.40 ERA.

Hayes takes the roster spot of Yan Gomes, who could miss between six and eight weeks with a sprained knee ligament. The 31-year-old veteran, who has played for the Marlins and Royals in parts of six seasons, hit .333 this spring with three home runs and seven RBI in 20 games.

Marcum appeared in one game this season for the Tribe and allowed one run over five innings.
