Nadal loses in Miami

Rafael Nadal was upset Sunday in his third- round match at the Miami Open by Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

The second-seeded Nadal had 12 break-point chances and converted only three.

A title at this Masters 1000 event continues to elude Nadal, who is a four- time runner-up.

Verdasco, seeded No. 29, has won two straight matches against his Spanish countryman after losing the first 13 meetings.

In other action, No. 3 seed Andy Murray beat Santiago Giraldo 6-3, 6-4 for his 499th career victory. Murray, who won this tournament in 2009 and 2013, is on the verge of a milestone achieved by 45 other men in the Open Era.

No. 7 seed Stan Wawrinka lost a pair of tiebreaks to Adrian Mannarino 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5). Wawrinka, who turned 30 on Saturday, has yet to advance past the fourth round at the Miami Open.

No. 8 seed Tomas Berdych avoided an early exit, fighting back from a set down to beat Bernard Tomic 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.

Also moving on with third-round wins were No. 15 seed Kevin Anderson, No. 17 seed Gael Monfils and Dominic Thiem.
