Raiders cut QB Schaub

The Oakland Raiders have released veteran quarterback Matt Schaub.

Oakland traded for the 34-year-old Schaub last March, giving Houston a sixth- round pick. Derek Carr beat Schaub for the starting job in training camp and Schaub threw just 10 passes in one season with the Raiders, two of which were intercepted.

In 11 NFL seasons with the Raiders, Texans and Falcons, Schaub, 33, has passed for 24,311 yards, 130 touchdowns and 86 interceptions in 139 games (90 starts). He reached two Pro Bowls with Houston and led the league in passing yards with 4,770 in 2009.

Atlanta selected Schaub in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft and later traded him to Houston in 2007 for draft picks.

Last week, the Raiders signed free-agent quarterback Christian Ponder, who played his first four seasons with Minnesota. He will compete with Matt McGloin for the backup job.
