Avs' MacKinnon sidelined with broken foot

Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the regular season because of a broken foot.

MacKinnon hurt his foot blocking a shot in a Feb. 22 game against Tampa Bay, but x-rays were negative. He continued playing and underwent an MRI exam on Thursday, revealing the fracture.

The Avalanche said MacKinnon would be sidelined for 6-to-8 weeks.

MacKinnon had not missed a game since being selected with the first overall pick of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. He has 14 goals and 24 assists for 38 points in 64 games this season, including five goals in his last five games.

The 19-year-old Halifax native has 38 goals and 101 points in 146 games over the past two seasons. He was the Calder Trophy winner as the NHL's top rookie last season after notching 24 goals and 63 points in 82 games.
