WASHINGTON, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- U.S. Olympic figure skater Ashley Wagner took home her third national title Saturday, calling the win the "sweetest" after a sub-par performance last year.

"This, of my three titles, this one tastes the sweetest," said Wagner. "This is the one that means the most to me, because this is the one that shows every single person that doubts me, every single person that says I'm too old, every single person that says I'm not capable of being a leading lady -- this shows them that they need to shut their mouths and watch me skate."

It was a much desired comeback after what Wagner calls her "horrifying" performance in the national championships last year. She had to obtain a committee vote to even be put on the 2014 U.S. Olympic team that went to Russia.

Defending champion Gracie Gold came in second after performing right after Wagner. A moment Gold said reminded her of the Winter Olympics in Sochi when she skated after gold medalist Adelina Sotnikova.

Wagner's next competition will be the world championship in Shanghai in March.
