The right-hander signed a one-year deal with the Padres on Nov. 20, 2013, but he missed the entire 2014 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April.

The two-time All-Star has a career record of 58-45 with a 3.40 ERA in 170 games, all but 10 as a starter, for Miami and Toronto.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Padres designated infielder/outfielder Jake Goebbert for assignment.
