BALTIMORE, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps was sentenced to 18 months probation and a one-year suspended prison sentence Friday after pleading guilty to driving under the influence.

The Olympic gold medalist was arrested in September after Baltimore police found him to have a blood alcohol limit twice the legal limit.

A Baltimore city judge handed down the sentence after Phelps' lawyer explained the 29-year-old completed a rehabilitation program and planned to continue to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

During his probation period, Phelps is prohibited from using alcohol at all. He is subject to random alcohol and drug testing.
