Boston Red Sox acquire Varvaro from Atlanta Braves

The Boston Red Sox acquired right-handed pitcher Anthony Varvaro from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Aaron Kurcz and cash considerations on Wednesday.

Varvaro, 30, was 3-3 with a 2.63 ERA in 61 relief appearances last season for the Braves.

Over the last two seasons with Atlanta, Varvaro is 6-4 with a 2.74 ERA and just 114 hits allowed in 128 innings. He is one of only 18 major league relievers with at least 50.0 innings pitched and an ERA of 2.85 or lower in each of the last two seasons.

Kurcz, 24, spent this past season with Double-A Portland where he was 3-2 with three saves and a 2.14 ERA in 34 games. For his minor league career, Kurcz has gone 13-11 with 16 saves and a 2.81 ERA in 121 games (12 starts).
