First-year assistant Ettore Messina will guide the Spurs in Popovich's absence. Messina, a member of the Italian Basketball Hall of Fame, is a two- time Euroleague Coach of the Year.

Messina will make NBA history, as no one born outside of the United States has ever coached an NBA game.
