DURHAM, N.C., Nov. 24 (UPI) -- The UNC Tar Heels went overboard with their victory celebration Thursday night when they spray painted the visitor's locker room at Duke after the game.

It started with a tradition of spray painting the victory bell either light or dark blue, depending on which team wins. UNC, however, took it a step further by trashing the locker rooms with paint on the walls and carpet.

There were a few UNC officials still at the stadium when Duke found the damage. UNC head coach Larry Fedora called Duke head coach David Cutcliffe Friday to apologize for his team's behavior. UNC's athletic director also called his Duke counterpart, Kevin White, to extend his apologies.

Fedora and Cunningham also issued a joint statement through the school, apologizing for the team's behavior and promising to pay for the damages.

We would like to apologize to the Duke Football program and Duke University for some inappropriate actions after last Thursday night's game in Durham. Our team took the celebration too far when they were painting the bell, resulting in damage to some of the facilities at Duke. We take full responsibility for our actions and will be paying for all costs associated with the cleanup. We view this as a rivalry built on mutual respect and we expect our players to behave better in a way that is more befitting of the rivalry.
