Pens' Fleury signs 4-year, $23M extension

The Pittsburgh Penguins signed goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to a four-year, $23 million extension through 2019, the team announced Wednesday.

Fleury, 29, is in his 11th season for the Penguins. The extension begins next season.

"I believe in Marc-Andre Fleury, as the team does," Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford said in a statement. "He's won before and he will win again. We're very pleased to have him signed long term."

Fleury has been a bull's-eye for criticism over the team's recent postseason failures, but he's off to a hot start this season with three shutouts and seven wins in nine games. He has a .931 save percentage and a 1.89 goals against average.

Currently the longest-tenured Penguins player, Fleury has posted 295 wins in 540 regular-season starts since making his debut on Oct. 10, 2003, not long after he was the No. 1 overall draft pick.

He won a Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 2009, but has since had up-and-down performances in the postseason, including a benching during a first-round series against the Islanders in 2013. He is 52-40 in 93 playoff games with a .905 save percentage and 2.68 goals-against average.

Fleury, whose contract was set to expire after this season, is the franchise's all-time leader in regular-season wins and shutouts (31).
