Keitany, Kipsang win 2014 NYC Marathon

Kenyan runners Mary Keitany and Wilson Kipsang won the New York City Marathon, a first for both.

NEW YORK, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Mary Keitany and Wilson Kipsang, both of Kenya, won the New York City Marathon on Sunday.

Keitany, who had an unofficial time of 2 hours 25 minutes and 7 seconds, finished 3 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor, Jemima Jelagat Sumgong, also of Kenya. That was the closest finish in the race's 44-year history.

This is Keitany's first New York City Marathon win, though she's twice finished third in the race.

In the men's competition, Kipsang was a first-time winner with an unofficial time of 2 hours 10 minutes and 4 seconds.

He edged out second-place winner, Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia, by 4 seconds.

Gebregziabher Gebremariam and Sara Moreira won third place in the men's and women's races respectively.
