LOS ANGELES, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Former Auburn University football star Bo Jackson said he has tried to help Florida State University quarterback Jameis Winston but there is only so much he can do.

The two have much in common. Both have excelled at multiple college sports. Both are Heisman Trophy winners. They are from the same town in Alabama.

Winston's image has been marred by scandal. In 2012, he was accused of sexually assaulting a fellow student. The investigation was mishandled by the university and Tallahassee police, sparking widespread criticism.

He was suspended from the baseball team after being cited for stealing crab legs from the local grocery. He was benched for a football game after shouting a sexually explicit comment in a public area of the campus.

Jackson said he has been trying to steer Winston down the right path. In an interview with ESPN's Jim Rome, he said Winston needs to change.

"I will lend you a hand. And if you take that hand for granted, I will yank it back and go about my business, go on about my life. That's how it is," he told "The Jim Rome Show." "Jameis Winston needs to make some changes in his life. Because it's affecting him now, and it's definitely going to affect him down the road."
