MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is reportedly going to plead not guilty to charges of child abuse in an attempt to return to the NFL.

Spokeswoman for Peterson's representation, Mary Flood, said he has no plans to plead guilty of reckless or negligent injury after he hit his son with a small tree branch during a visit.

"If the court asks for a plea tomorrow [and we do expect that to happen], it will very definitely be NOT guilty," Flood wrote to ESPN Tuesday. "We hope that a trial date is also discussed but don't yet know how the court's docket is looking."

Peterson has been defiant about accusations. Following a story in The Star Tribune claiming Peterson used charity funds for hotel rooms with sex and drinking, he took to Twitter to deny the claims.

Peterson has been barred from all NFL activities until the resolution of his case but is still receiving his $11.75 million salary.

Peterson's initial appearance in Montgomery County, Texas, is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
