TEMPE, Ariz., Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Jonathan Dwyer, running back for the Arizona Cardinals, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of aggravated assault.

Phoenix police accused Dwyer, 25, of aggravated assault stemming from an incident involving a 27-year-old woman and an 18-month-old boy in July.

Dwyer told police he wasn't involved in any physical assaults.

In response to the arrest at the Cardinals' training facility in Tempe, the team deactivated Dwyer from all team activities.

"We will continue to closely monitor this as it develops and evaluate additional information as it becomes available," team officials said in a statement.

The arrest comes amid pending domestic assault and abuse cases involving a few NFL players, including Baltimore Ravens' Ray Rice, Minnesota Vikings' Adrian Peterson and Carolina Panthers' Greg Hardy.

The NFL has come under fire for its recent handling of abuse cases and hired three experts on domestic violence to advise the league.
