Rams DE Long needs ankle surgery

The St. Louis Rams have lost another key player for an extended period of time.

Rams coach Jeff Fisher announced Wednesday that defensive end Chris Long will have ankle surgery this week and will miss at least "a few" games. He suffered the injury during Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings.

St. Louis is expected to place Long on the injured reserve/designated to return list. Multiple reports say he will miss 1-to-2 months.

Long has tallied 33 sacks since 2011 for the Rams, who selected him with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

William Hayes will most likely start in place of Long.

The Rams already lost quarterback Sam Bradford to a season-ending knee injury.
