Cowboys get Spencer back

There hasn't been a lot of positive news surrounding the Dallas Cowboys defense this summer, but the much-maligned unit got a bit of a boost Saturday when veteran defensive end Anthony Spencer was activated off the PUP list.

The veteran pass rusher, who is attempting to return from microfracture knee surgery, passed his physical in time to be a part of Dallas' 53-man roster.

The same can't be said of 19 others who were jettisoned as the Cowboys reached the mandated limit.

Dallas released wide receiver Desmon Briscoe and offensive guard Uche Nwaneri while the team waived running backs Phillip Tanner, Ryan Williams and D.J. Adams, offensive tackle Josh Aladenoye, defensive ends Caesar Rayford and Kenneth Boatright, defensive tackle Dartwan Bush, wide receivers LaRon Byrd and Jamar Newsome, guard Stephen Goodin, cornerback Terrance Mitchell, center Ronald Patrick, linebackers Dontavis Sapp, Will Smith and Keith Smith, safety Ryan Smith and tight end Asa Watson.

The Cowboys also waived-injured linebacker Orie Lemon and defensive tackle Zach Minter and placed cornerback Orlando Scandrick and safety Jakar Hamilton on the suspended list to begin the season.

Finally, Dallas acquired defensive end Lavar Edwards from Tennessee for an undisclosed 2015 draft pick.
