The Texas Rangers announced Monday that outfielder Shin-Soo Choo will miss the remainder of the 2014 season due to a bone spur in his left elbow.
Choo, limited to only 75 games in the outfield this year by the injury, is slated to undergo surgery on the elbow within the next two weeks. The Rangers officially placed him on the 15-day disabled list prior to Monday's game in Seattle.
The decision concludes a disappointing debut campaign in Texas for the offseason acquisition. Signed to a seven-year, $130 million contract by the Rangers in December, Choo batted just .242 with 13 homers and 40 RBI while battling problems with both his elbow and left ankle.
Choo hit .285 with 21 homers, 54 RBI, 20 stolen bases and a .423 on-base percentage with the Cincinnati Reds last season.
Outfielder Michael Choice was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock to replace Choo on the active roster, with the Rangers also selecting the contract of catcher Tomas Telis from the Express on Monday.
Choice struggled badly in a 69-game stint with Texas earlier in the season, posting a .177 average with eight homers and 28 RBI. The former first-round pick had seven home runs and 31 in 43 contests at Round Rock, however.
Telis, who's hit .318 over 106 games between Round Rock and Double-A Frisco, takes the spot created by Sunday's trade of catcher Geovany Soto to Oakland.
