Montana starting tackle to miss season

Montana left tackle John Schmaing will miss the 2014 season due to academic issues, the Big Sky Conference university announced Friday.

The 6-foot-7, 290-pound junior from Billings would have been a starter for the second season in a row. Last season, he started all 13 games and was an honorable mention all-conference selection.

"Everybody in college football has situations that they obviously have to deal with like this, and this just happens to be ours right now," Griz coach Mick Delaney said. "John's got another year to play, so he'll be an integral part of the team this year, and carry that on into his senior season in 2015. Like anything else, you just have to move forward and stay positive, and that's exactly what we are doing."

Montana, ranked fifth in The Sports Network FCS Preseason Top 25, will kick off its season on Aug. 30 at Wyoming.
